SDSU: Moving the Vision Forward

By: Dwaine Chapel, Executive Director, Research Park

A diversified economy provides opportunities for long term growth.  South Dakota State University has a long-standing commitment to the agriculture industry.  Brookings itself has shown growth in several industry sectors and has developed a niche within the bio industry.  A collaborative effort has been underway for the past several years to expand bio sciences.  President Dunn is leading the charge to diversify our states economy through a research initiative.  He has challenged the university and community to double research within 10-years.  A major component of that growth will be within the bio industry.

The South Dakota State University Growth Partnership (the management board that oversees the day to day operations of the Research Park at SDSU) has embraced that challenge.

The Growth Partnership participates in a collaborative effort to initiate a 10-year Bioscience strategy that outlines recruitment and research paths.  Key components include:

  • University research and the translational interface created by the research parks has the potential to expand private sector engagement and inspire growth of new companies spawned out of research discoveries, creating new value and job growth in South Dakota. Partnerships with SDSU and industry have been developed.
  • Leverage the assets and capabilities of the BioSNTR and the Research Park at SDSU to develop an aligned strategy for fostering a growing and sustainable bioscience economy in South Dakota.
  • Further develop a contract research organization to provide an adequate process for industry to engage with SDSU.
  • Leverage services assets in cGMP facility and sequencing center.

To move forward this vision, the Growth Partnership board has recently initiated a 10-year strategic plan.  Key components include:

  • Access SDSU – collaborating with the VP of Research and Economic Development, Dr. Daniel Scholl and his team to become the link between industry and university experts.
  • Development Team of Experts – assist in creating a clear path to research expansion, mapping of assets, understanding current industry partnerships, developing a pathway to new partnerships and enhancing the ability to commercialize intellectual property.
  • Enrich, embrace, and entice entrepreneurial excitement – collaborating with SDSU Tech Transfer, the Brookings Economic Development Corporation, the Enterprise Institute, Department of Economics and the Entrepreneurial Studies Team.

These are a few of the current activities underway that will diversify our economic position.  On the horizon, the Growth Partnership will collaborate with SDSU and others to develop strategies for engineering, pharmacy and food sciences.

President Dunn and his team have challenged us to diversify and enhance research, the Research Park is committed to be a strong partner and appreciates the opportunity to assist in implementation of his vision.
